Also posted at HighGear as I am a returning RC player and not sure where the experts are these days.
Recognised a few names here though, so hopefully you can help.

Apologies if this is an old subject but whilst I've seen others with similar problems I havn't seen a solution yet.

Like others I've just returned to RC after 18 months and tried to install on a new PC running XP Pro.

No problems with RC installation and can run OK with LWFF in 2 axis mode, but when I try 3-axis I get the brake permanently on and unable to rev whenever I put into gear. Therefore stuck on the start line.

Have followed Screamin's guide to setup LWFF, (which worked fine on my old Win 98 PC) and also tried Patch 4 and Patch 6 with and without Qfixapp.

DXTweak2 reports that Accel is axis Z and Brake is Z rotation which I think is correct and confirmed by NFS:Porsche which works fine in 3-axis mode, (don't have any other racing sims/games yet).
Brake axis also reports 65535 at rest so not a sticky pedal problem.

Appears to me to be a problem with RC not seeing the Brake axis correctly.
In controller setup Brake is seen as the Y axis and when I try button assignment eg Gear Up to button 1, it is listed as Brake + Button 1.
Once again confirming that Brake is seen as permanently on.

Have tried setting some upper deadzone in controller setup but no difference.

Have not tried changing DXtweak2 default settings or any controller-specific statements in Ral.cfg.

Does anyone have LWFF working in 3-axis mode with XP ?
Any suggestion on how to do it greatly appreciated.

I have the *exact* same problem

works fine in 2 axis mode, in 3 axis mode the game doesn't allow me to select the proper axis for throttle and brake

i am using an MS sidewinder FF

I have also tried the MS 4.0 drievrs on XP (even tho they say not to). I guess if we could 'confuse' the driver to reverse axis, or else the game somehow, we would have this problem solved.

it sucks because you cant play in split axis - unless we are missing something.

I use MS SW FF Wheel and pedals, USB with version 4.0 Sidewinder software. I have both Win98 and XP on the same PC, and neither give me a problem, split axis just works.

Obviously I have split axis enabled in the game, and separate axis ticked in the sidewinder controller software, but I didn't do anything out of the ordinay - I have patch 6 installed.

Actually, I did do something out of the ordinary, thinking about it: I just copied my ral.dat file over from my previous PC (which was win9.
Ral.dat file contains the controller settings, which certainly work for MS SW FF wheel. you could try copying my ral.dat file into your rc/var folder (overwrite your existing one), and with split axis ticked in SW software, see if it works.
If not, revert back to your old one (make a copy of it first!). If it does work, you can just change all the other settings to how you want them.

I'll put a copy of my ral.dat file in the download section if you want to try it.

Found a solution in a Highgear reply.

Pete,

You were on the right trail with controller settings.
I added the following to ral.cfg and 3-axis now working with LWFF.

Thanks
